OUTDOOR INSTRUCTION

OUTER PEAKS SERIES

SPRING 2008

OUTER PEAKS 1: Basic Top Rope Anchors

The aspiring outdoor climber needs to know how to "get the rope up there." OP1 covers site considerations, ethics and etiquette, knots for anchoring, equipment dynamics and limitations, basic top rope anchoring skills including anchor system evaluation, and repelling. Prerequisite: Inner Peaks top rope belay certified. It is one day (9AM-4PM) Crowder’s Mountain. Directions and gear list available.

April 5th       May 3rd

Cost: $80 for non-members/$70 for members

OUTER PEAKS 2: Advanced Top Rope Anchors

If you’re serious about the sport, then advanced top rope anchor skills are a must. Anchor point and vector force evaluation, redundancy, and equalization - all taught in this course - are common themes that run through even the most advanced and technical forms of climbing. Prerequisite: OUTER PEAKS 1, or equivalent experience. It is also one day (9AM-4PM) at Crowder’s Mountain, unless otherwise noted. Directions and gear list available.

April 19th        May 17th

Cost: $80 for non-members/$70 for members

OUTER PEAKS 3: Outdoor Sport Climbing

If you know how to lead indoors, and want to take your climbing to the next level, then the skills of OP3 are essential. There are big differences between indoor and outdoor sport climbing. Anchor and bolt evaluation, stick clipping, cleaning, backing off, and how to "get the rope down from up there" are covered in this class. Prerequisite: lead certified at Inner Peaks. It is one full day (9AM-4PM) at Crowder’s Mountain or Pilot Mountain. Directions and gear list available.

Cost: $80 for non-members/$70 for members

Available through Private Instruction.  Call for details

OUTER PEAKS 4: Traditional Lead Climbing

Your head is your most valuable ally and your worst enemy. Traditional leading is extremely technical and, let’s face it, scary. To protect yourself and your second you must possess proficiency in gear placement and cleaning, artificial anchor building, advanced rope management, and how to keep your head on your side. OP4 covers all of these skills and everything in the multi-pitch process from bottom to top and back down again, including multi-pitch repelling. Prerequisite: Lead certified at Inner Peaks and lead experience. This course is 2 very full days and usually takes place at Linville or Looking Glass. Directions and gear list available.

Available through Private Instruction
