Train Wreck Tour 2014

Follow long time NC local, and Inner Peaks’ new head route setter, Stephen “Trainwreck” Meinhold, around North Carolina as he samples some of the newest and best indoor bouldering in the state. This is a thee stop Tour, first stop is Iron Palm Bouldering in Asheville, second stop, Progression Climbing in Chapel Hill and a final stop at Inner Peaks Climbing Center in Charlotte with an $1,800 cash purse for Open competitors and tons of gear prizes for everyone else. Open competitors who win at either Iron Palm or Progression get a free ticket to the final cash prize round at Inner Peaks. The 2nd and 3rd place finishers get free entries into the preliminary rounds at the other gyms. Beginner and Intermediate climbers will get goody bags and be entered to win great gear prizes. There will also be sponsorships from Scarpa and Evolv awarded to three lucky competitors. Check the tabs below for registration info for each leg of the Tour.

Final Tour Stop: Inner Peaks Climbing Center

Date: April 5th 2014

Cost: $40 early bird / $45 after 3/29/14
The final stop of the Train Wreck Tour will be at Inner Peaks with a $1,800 cash purse for Open competitors and tons of gear prizes for everyone else. This will be an all-day event starting with open qualifiers in the morning. The top 6 from this morning round will join the prior Tour Stop winners in evening finals. The recreational and intermediate climbers will compete in a redpoint round in the afternoon. The train arrives at the station at 7:30 and the show begins with our open finals, where the top 8 competitors from the tour will compete for cash! Awards will be presented after. So, come watch as the strongest climbers in the southeast duke it out for the big bucks.

7:30-9:30 onsight finals

Tour Stop 1: Iron Palm Bouldering

Where: Iron Palm Bouldering, Asheville, NC

Date: February 8th 2014

Cost: $40 early bird / $45 after 2/1/14
This is a brand new bouldering gym that just opened this winter in Ashville, NC. This will be a redpoint format competition where climbers will be competing in two afternoon rounds. Climbers will have free reign to all boulder problems for all 3 hours and the top 6 boulder problems will count towards competitors’ final score.
11am registration opens, 11:45 rules meeting
Round 1: 12pm-3pm will be Recreational Female, Intermediate Male, and Open Female.
Round 2: 3pm-6pm will be Recreational Male, Intermediate Female, and Open Male.
Climbers will need 2 signed witnesses to confirm sends, and top 6 boulder problems will count towards overall score.
Format: Redpoint Round with 3 categories:
Men: Rec v0-v3, Intermediate v3-v6, Open v6+
Women: Rec v0-v2, Intermediate v2-v5, Open v5+

  • There is a special rate for Tour participants from Four Points Hotel.
  • There will be an after-party and beer specials from Hi-Wire Brewing.

Tour Stop 2: Progression Bouldering

Where: Progression Climbing, Chapel Hill

Date: March 1st 2014

Cost: $40 early bird / $45 after 2/22/14
Progression, another new bouldering gym set to open early spring, will be ready to show off their brand new walls with fresh holds and head setters from around the state. This will be a redpoint format competition where climbers will be competing in one afternoon round. Climbers will have free reign to try all boulder problems for all 4 hours and the top 6 boulder problems will count towards competitors’ final score.
1 pm registration opens, 1:45 rules meeting
Time: 2pm-6pm
Climbers will need 2 signed witnesses to confirm sends, and top 6 boulder problems will count towards overall score.
Format: Redpoint Round with 3 categories:
Men: Rec v0-v3, Intermediate v3-v6, Open v6+
Women: Rec v0-v2, Intermediate v2-v5, Open v5+
